LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: DEPENDENT COVERAGE UP TO AGE 26

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care act was signed into law on March 23, 2010, requiring health plans to cover dependents to the age of 26. This extension will go nto effect on September 23, 2010. Due to this effective date, there will be a temporary gap with lost medical coverage for many dependents when they graduate from high school or college, or when they “age out” of coverage. Many medical carriers
are taking a proactive approach to those who may experience a gap in coverage.

Following, is a list of medical carriers and their stance to this provision.


Congress Extends ARRA COBRA Subsidy Once Again
April 15, 2010
 Congress has approved legislation extending the COBRA subsidy eligibility period under ARRA, to May 31, 2010. The previous extension expired on March 31, 2010.   The changes affect continuation coverage offered under COBRA and any comparable state law.  This law takes effect immediately and is retroactive to April 1, 2010. 


Health Care Reform Update
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — H. R. 3590
On March 21st the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Senate health care reform bill by a vote of 219 to 213. It was then signed by President Omaha on Tuesday. Shortly after the President signed the bill, Senators began deliberations on the reconciliation bill.    Republicans filed 29 amendments to the reconciliation package.  After 10 hours of debate a vote was taken; the Senate vote was 56 to 43.  The Senate parliamentarian ruled early Thursday that due to the elimination of the 2 Republican provisions a new vote was required by the House. The final House vote on Thursday was 220 to 207. The reconciliation bill made revisions to a number of provisions adopted by the Senate on December 24, 2009.  How will this legislation affect you and your company?
